The Opening Conference of “Jolly Livestock in Turkey and EU Project”, which is conducted by SETBİR and qualified for a grant within the scope of “Civil Society Dialogue V Program” since 1st of April, 2019 was held on 19th of June 2019, between 09.00 – 14.00 in Sheraton Hotel Ankara, Turkey.

Jolly Livestock in Turkey and EU project aims to ensure animal welfare on the farm and during transportation. The project that is carried out in partnership with Valencia Regional Food Business Federation (FEDACOVA) will be conducted in Edirne, Bursa, Balıkesir, Mersin, Erzurum, Valencia and Brussels.

Training activities and information within the project will be done. Spanish partner, FEDACOVA, will help for investigation on site of EU best practises and providing EU regulations and manual examples.

For drivers using animal transport vehicles, drivers’ chambers will be visited in the provinces where the trainings will be organized and information will be shared about the tasks and expected results of the project and information will be provided on the outputs.

Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Republic of Turkey Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate for EU Affairs, non-governmental organisations, representatives of dairy and meat sectors and presses attended the opening conference of the project that will be carried out with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in the partnership of Valencia Regional Food Business Federation (FEDACOVA) from Spain in order to solve problems related to livestock sector. On the other hand, academicians and undergrads also participated to the conference.

In the conference that was started with the opening speeches, SETBİR’s board chairman Tarık Tezel emphasised the animal welfare and mentioned about the benefits of the project to the sector and Turkey. After the speech of Tezel, Deputy Director of Republic of Turkey Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate for EU Affairs, Department of Project Implementation, Bulent Ozcan, was made opening speech with the information about Civil Society Dialogue Programme.

On the back of the opening speeches, Prof. Dr. Zehra Bozkurt from Afyon Kocatepe University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Animal Husbandry made the presentation about implementation of animal welfare in Turkey during the EU harmonization process.

After that, panel discussion about “Animal Welfare in Turkey and EU” was moderated by Sedat Pisirici.

The first panel discussion speech was done by Bayram Sertkaya, Head of Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate Food and Control, Department of Animal Health and Quarantine. He mentioned to regulation and implementation of animal welfare in farms and transportation. After Sertkaya, sector manager of EU Delegation to Turkey, Nermin Kahraman, made a presentation about European Union policies and practices on animal welfare. The last speaker of the panel discussion, SETBİR’s board chairman Tarık Tezel, talked about the examples of best practises in Turkey and the effects of animal welfare implementation on animal product quality.

Participants have shown great interest to “Jolly Livestock in Turkey and EU Project” and they have given helpful feedbacks about the project.
